At Eagle Family Dental in Arlington, Washington, Drs. Bryce Duskin, Arezoo Holdaway, Gavin Mcnelis, Ally Mueller, and their team understand how challenging it can be to deal with dental pain while waiting for an appointment. While professional care is essential for addressing the root cause of the issue, there are steps you can take at home to manage your discomfort in the meantime. Here are five practical tips detailing what you can do for your dental pain at home.
A simple saltwater rinse can help ease dental discomfort. Rinsing with salt water can help reduce inflammation while cleansing the area. Take ½ teaspoons of salt and dissolve it in a glass of warm water. Swish this around in your mouth for about 30 seconds, and then spit it out. You can repeat this process a few times a day as needed. Saltwater also helps remove debris and bacteria that might aggravate the area, promoting temporary relief.
Pain and swelling can be decreased with over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. We recommend 1 Tylenol 325mg and 3 200mg Ibuprofen taken all at once every 4 to 6 hours. Always follow the recommended dosage instructions and consult a healthcare professional if you have any medical conditions or are taking other medications. Avoid placing aspirin directly on your gums or teeth, as this can cause irritation or chemical burns.
If your dental pain is caused by swelling or inflammation, you can apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek, which can help. Take a frozen ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables, wrap it in a cloth, and hold it against the affected area for 15 minutes. This can numb the area and reduce swelling, temporarily relieving discomfort.
Certain foods can exacerbate dental pain, especially if the problem involves a sensitive tooth or cavity. Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or applesauce, and avoid hard, crunchy, or extremely hot or cold items. To stop the painful area from becoming more irritated, chew on the unaffected side of your mouth.
Clove oil is a natural remedy that has been utilized for centuries. It is recognized for its ability to relieve dental pain due to its numbing and anti-inflammatory properties. Lightly apply a minimal dab of clove oil using a cotton ball and then apply it to the area needing relief. Alternatively, mix a few drops of clove oil with a carrier oil like olive oil for a milder application. Use this remedy sparingly, as too much clove oil can cause irritation.
While these tips can temporarily help you manage dental pain, they are not substitutes for professional care. At Eagle Family Dental, our dentists are dedicated to addressing the underlying cause of your discomfort and restoring your oral health.
